What is peer mentoring?

Peer mentoring is pretty much what it looks like — mentoring from a peer. In my case, I provide peer mentoring to autistic teens and adults based on my lived experience with autism.

I was diagnosed with autism at age 35, after decades of challenges, mainly with social communication and sensory problems. After diagnosis, I spent some years thinking back on my life and wondering what it had been like if I had had the appropriate support systems in place. I’m sure it would have been a lot easier and life would have made a lot more sense than it did.

It took me a while to process the diagnosis but after I had done that and also received support and put into place strategies so I can manage all aspects of my life — home, work, study and social, I wanted to give back. My desire to pass on what I have learnt and all the life hacks I have put into practice to make life easier and more fun resulted in the peer mentoring services I now offer.

What can you expect from a typical peer mentoring session with me?

  • Someone to listen to your story

  • Caring and non-judgemental approach

  • Ask me anything about my life and ask me for advice on any topic

  • We can work on goal setting and create a strategy where you achieve your goals but also look after your wellbeing in the process

  • A welcoming, inclusive session

  • A strong focus on your strengths to elevate your life to the next level, while acknowledging your challenges with advice and tips on how to manage them.

I hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and use this knowledge to assist my clients who have self employment goals, with tips and strategies while they are building their business. If you have an idea for a business, I’d love to help you with your startup phase. Microbusiness mentoring is a top skill of mine and my clients really enjoy the sessions we have brainstorming their business launch, covering all aspects including branding, social media, marketing and media opportunities.

I’m also currently studying a Master of Autism degree.
